ASICS started in 1949 when Kihachiro Onitsuka founded Onitsuka Tiger, a basketball shoe manufacturer in his hometown of Kobe. Onitsuka focused on the sucker function of the octopus and created a product that complemented the problems of existing basketball shoes. To prove his product, he persuaded BIIKILA ABEBE, who won a gold medal barefoot in the marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics, to wear the shoes he made. Since then, Abebe wearing Onitsuka's shoes won the Mainichi Marathon and was recognized for their excellent quality.

In 1977, Onitsuka Tiger merged with GTO, a sportswear manufacturer, and JELENK, a knitwear manufacturer, to form ASICS. The company name ASICS is derived from the first letters of the Latin phrase 'ANIMA SANA IN CORPORE SANO' (a healthy mind in a healthy body).
